June 17, 2015: Why We Remember
June 17th, 2015: Why remember the attack on the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC, by white supremacist Dylann Roof? He killed 9 brothers and sisters in Christ, wounding a 10th. That's a good reason. But we should also be mindful that the FBI has seen a material uptick in white supremacists activity since the fall of 2019. This is defined as domestic terrorism by the FBI. There has been a 40% increase in arrests of white supremacist terror suspects in the past year alone. The numbers per the FBI: they are looking at about 5,000 active terrorism-related incidents in the United States and abroad of which about 850 were related to domestic terrorism (1,000 are tied to the Islamic State or affiliated groups). They are concerned by copycat attacks as part of the rise in white supremacist activity.
